Our next piece is named after Sumaira Zaheer, who is 36 years old. She has a Bachelors of Commerce degree with a major in Strategic Management and Organization from the University of Alberta and is currently a Transformational Life Coach, and mother. The mental illness that Sumaira is dealing with is Selective Mutism, which is an anxiety disorder in which you are unable to speak in certain situations. There is something holding you back from speaking and preventing you from fully expressing your thoughts and emotions and it is not something you have control over. When asked what had triggered selective mutism for Sumaira, she explained that selective mutism is something she has had since early childhood. When asked what hurdles or obstacles she faced due to selective mutism she explained that growing up with it she was living in fear most of the time and not knowing why, as she couldn’t control how this anxiety disorder would take over her body. When she was put in a position to talk to others, even those whom she knew very well or would see on a regular basis, her heart would start racing, her throat would feel constricted and dry, and her face would be expressionless. Words were unable to escape her mouth and she would just stand there in a frozen state. Even when she knew what to say, she couldn’t say it, no matter how much she wanted to. Having selective mutism was like being in a prison, confined within herself. She didn’t know how she got there and wanted to be free, however she couldn’t find a way out. At times, having selective mutism was isolating, for she was afraid to speak up, share her feelings with others, and she was unable to stand up for herself when she needed to. Everyone around her seemed “normal,” as they were able to carry a conversation, participate in discussions, and make friends easily. She didn’t know what was wrong with her, but she just thought that’s the way she was always going to be. She eventually got better at verbally communicating, but it was a very long battle. Every now and then, she has triggers where she finds herself in the familiar frozen state, however, she is able to get over it now and move on quickly. When asked Sumaira what advice she would give someone dealing with the same mental illness as her she recommends that if you have selective mutism you should find non verbal ways to express yourself, through art, writing, photography, and so on. Having such an outlet will not only bring you joy, but also ease your anxiety when it is at its highest. She would also highly encourage those with selective mutism to seek help. You don't have to suffer and live in fear forever. It may seem like there is no way out, but with the help of a therapist, you can have a voice and not feel afraid to share it with others. Lastly, having patience is fundamental. Selective mutism isn’t something you can get over within days; it will take time, patience, and ongoing support from your loved ones.

This is such a perfect staple piece to have in your closet. An oversized, long, black and white plaid button up top. The beauty of this top is that you can wear it opened up or closed. The model is wearing a small in it. The fabric is made out of wool.
