Our next piece is named after Sana Alugaili. Sana has 3 kids and they were all conceived naturally but it took her almost 3 years to have her first child. When asked how infertility impacted her mental or emotional well being she explained that from 2010-2015 she had 4 miscarriages and 2 successful pregnancies. The emotional, mental and physical toll on her body was extremely difficult. Due to all the trauma that she endured she struggled with a lot of pain and was subsequently diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2016. When asked what has been the hardest part of dealing with infertility that people don’t talk about she explained the emotional struggle, as well as the physical pain when you miscarry; there is the emotional pain and the stress and doubt you feel when you think you will never have a child. Sana went on to explain that the emotions people most often don’t see with infertility is the sadness and self doubt. When asked what helped her get through the moments of grief and uncertainty she explained that at the point of her struggles nothing really helped her. When asked what Sana wished people would stop asking her throughout her infertility journey she explained that she didn’t want the subject to be brought up it was too much for her and she wanted to be left alone. Sana’s advice to other women struggling with infertility is that she would begin by saying “do you.” You try to fufill your dreams and desires and only you know how much you can handle. Give yourself grace. We tend to be so hard on ourselves and we need to be kind to ourselves. Lastly, be OK with the decisions you make, if you decide you have tried everything in your power and capability and you are done then be okay with that decision with no regrets.
