Our next piece is named after Ashima Sumaru-Jurf. It took Ashima 8 years to conceive her son naturally but after 6 miscarriages. When asked Ashima how infertility impacted her mental or emotional well-being she explained that although she had their son in 2019, she is always thinking about women and their partners who are in the midst of an infertility journey, especially women who are working through a miscarriage. She will never forget how it can feel like such a lonely and heartbreaking experience, and one that is hard to share with others. When it comes to miscarriage, it is also often filled with misinformation or reluctance from medical providers to provide clear and accurate information about what is happening, and what the options are, which adds to confusion (and sometimes blame), which is layered on top of grief. Miscarriage can also be physically traumatizing and hard to openly discuss, unlike birth stories, where it is more usual to share details with other women. When asked what helps her get through moments of grief and uncertainty Ashima explained that she has tried to support other women by sharing her own experience openly and making room for them to share their thoughts and emotions with someone else in a safe, understanding space. She has also tried to share accurate information, resources, and strategies to help women advocate for what they need and feel confident asking for information options. Building a community is something that helps her put things in perspective. When asked Ashima what advice she would give other women walking through the path of infertility she explained that when you are in the midst of grief in this journey, it’s fine to focus on yourself. Finding space and time to work through emotions, skipping a baby shower (because it can make your grief so raw after a loss or setback), and having a good cry when you need to. No one knows what this feels like but you. Each infertility situation is complex and unique due to so many different factors such as your age, how long you’ve been trying, family and friend relationships, and how your partner copes, etc. Find and focus on the things that you love to do and make you feel whole.
